A CRACKDOWN on bogus callers has been launched after seven OAPs were visited by conmen within a week.

Conmen gained access to five homes and escaped with property including purses, handbags and cash from four of their victims.

But two quick-witted OAPs refused to let the caller into their home.

Seven women aged 75 to 93 were targeted between February 16 and 23 on the south side of Glasgow. Almost all gave police a similar description of one bogus tradesman.

Community safety officers at Cathcart Police Station believe the incidents may be linked.

Sergeant Paul Roberston said: "This type of crime shakes people up and the lasting impact on the victims is far greater than getting their purse stolen. It is a despicable and evil crime."

Three victims, aged 75, 77 and 81, were visited between 1.30pm and 6pm in Snuffmill Road in Cathcart, Stanmore Road in Mount Florida and Kingsbridge Drive, King's Park by a man posing as a plumber or gas worker with fake ID.

Days before, a man claiming to be a plumber was in Deanston Drive in Shawlands, Drakemire Drive in Simshill, Carmunnock Road in Castlemilk and Tankerland Road in Cathcart where he conned women in their 70s, 80s and 90s.

He was 5ft 6in to 5ft 8in tall with short or collar-length dark hair and dark clothing.

Last week, serial bogus caller Denis Smyth was jailed for eight years after preying on 17 elderly victims.
