PALMERSTON North Surf Lifesaving Club only just scraped through with enough money to keep a patrol of lifeguards at Himatangi this year.
Manawatu District Council granted them only $10,000 of the $15,000 they needed to patrol the beach five days a week.

Head lifeguard Amy Carlyon said they are short of first-aid supplies, including gauze, saline solution, wound dressings, and plasters.
They are also short of rescue boards, and would love a shelter for the lifeguard tower. "We really rely on donations," Miss Carlyon said.

"On Sunday, December 13 we had no patrol because no-one turned up. We have 30 active members but they don't turn up, we need volunteers who actually will."
